Be Good to Birds for CSI Challenge # 110

I like colour challenges a lot, and one of the most popular ones must be Color, Stories, Inspiration (CSI). Previously I’ve taken part in another one called the Color Rooms, but now that they are taking a break, I’m giving CSI my first try!

CSI is not just a colour challenge, but there are also prompts regarding journaling (Testimony) and embellishments or techniques (Evidence). I chose the following for Evidence: crown, pearls, lace (doily), something sheer/fabric (under the title), and for Testimony, pearls in the journaling spot.

Here is the Case File, that is, the prompt for CSI Challenge # 110. Tehtävänanto haasteeseen 110 oli tällainen:

I had neither a pet story nor feathers, but I was nevertheless inspired by the animal theme and birds in particular! My photos are from Seville, Spain, a neighborhood called Triana across the Guadalquivir river from the Old Town. The main photo is of an old sign of advice hand-painted on tiles, reminding children not to mistreat birds, and the journaling is the translation thereof. That's quite sweet, though of course it makes you wonder how badly kids may have treated the birds for a sign like that to be necessary!

Black, White and Silver Layout

Hi again, and welcome to join the monthly Design Challenge at Allt om Scrap! What I'm sharing with you today is my DT layout for this challenge, where the prompt is to create using the colours black, white and silver only. The challenge is open for participation until March 19, 2014.

I wanted to use the silver colour in particular, and I even had a photo with some silver in the little knight's helmet and armour. Not having a lot of silver coloured stuff in my stash, I began to alter my background and embellishments. I'm particularly happy with the background, which I stencilled with acrylic paint!

Next, I painted some chipboard alphas and frames with black gesso. At this point I also had the Scrap Africa challenge in mind, where the February theme is to use altered chipboard. After the black gesso I gave them a silver embossing powder finish.

I did not want to use a lot of embellishments, because I wanted to leave room for the background and chipboards to show. But I did find a key and a couple of buttons that I think went well together with the rest of the layout, as well as some patterned tape, so that's what I added in the end!

Neulekuvioisella sabluunalla ja akryylimaaleilla tuli minusta hyvä tausta, ja seuraavaksi maalasin aakkoset ja kehykset mustalla gessolla. Siihen päälle tuli hopeinen kohokuviointijauhe. Osallistun tällä leiskalla myös Scrap African haasteeseen, jonka aiheena on itse koristellut puupahvi- eli chipboard-kuviot.

Paljon muuta koristetta en halunnutkaan laittaa, jotta tausta sekä "hopeoidut" aakkoset ja kehykset saisivat tilaa. Ihan pelkistetyksi en osaa leiskaa kuitenkaan jättää, joten viimeistelin sen parilla napilla, avaimella ja kuvioteipeillä.

Altering chipboard was a lot of fun and did not take too long, so I'm sure I'll want to do it again soon. Next I think I'll check out what others have done for this theme at Scrap Africa!

Pahvikuvioiden tuunaaminen oli hauskaa, eikä siinä kestänyt kauankaan, joten sitä voisin tehdä jatkossa enemmänkin. Menenkin seuraavaksi kurkkaamaan, mitä muut ovat aiheesta keksineet Scrap African haasteeseen!

Mixed Media Hearts for Design Memory Craft Challenge

Happy Valentine's Day again, with one more project! This is for the Valentine's Day themed challenge at Design Memory Craft. As usually, all kinds of projects are allowed in this challenge, and I wanted to make a three-dimensional one for a change. I had these pre-made cardboard hearts to decorate, and started by painting over the kraft coloured figures with several layers of white gesso.

This was the first time I tried a Stamper's Big Brush Pen for the exact purpose of stamping, and it worked out really well. The pattern did not print perfectly, though, because of the uneven surface, but I don't mind that in a background .

I coloured the corners with Art Grip Aquarelle pencils and gave one heart a bit more of a pink shade. I took some used postage stamps with flowers, mounted them on small pieces of black dot patterned paper and used a piece of washi tape behind the images.

The hearts had brown strings too short to hang them like I wanted to, so I attached a longer black ribbon by sewing some stitches and using some Tacky Glue to make sure it sticks. Finally I glued a small red crystal bead to cover the ends of the ribbon.

Sydänten keskelle löytyi kuviksi pari kukka-aiheista postimerkkiä, joiden taustalle laitoin palaset pilkullista mustanruskeaa paperia ja pätkän washiteippiä. Alkuperäiset ripustusnauhat olivat liian lyhyet, joten lisäsin mustan ripustusnauhan muutamalla pistolla alkuperäiseen ripustimeen ommellen, ja varmuuden vuoksi kiinnitin vielä nauhan päät tujakalla Tacky Glue -liimalla. Lopuksi peitin nauhan päät punaisella kristallihelmellä. Ja näin ovikoriste on valmis!

Et voilá, here's the decoration ready to hang on the door!

See With the Heart

These ATCs are for a swap with the theme Non-Traditional Coloured Valentines. I made a set of four using the same stamp, See with the Heart from the Polish brand 3rd Eye. My guess is that this stamp has also been inspired by a quote from the Little Prince, which is a fun coincidence with my post from yesterday. In this lovely old book, a fox tells the prince a secret: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."

I printed the words "See with the Heart" with a couple of different fonts and made different backgrounds for each card. The one above is made of scrapbooking paper and book pages, where I think the contrast works really well. The one below is perhaps my favourite of all, with a background paper I made in an art journaling workshop by a Finnish teacher Päivi Eerola. She showed how to make cool backgrounds from illustrated book pages by doodling several layers in different colours and types of pens. Check out her website Peony and Parakeet for more great ideas!

Paperi on koristeltu tekniikalla, jonka neuvoi Päivi Eerola viime syksyn art journal -kurssillaan Espoon Askartelu Amaliassa. Lasten kuvakirjan sivulle on tehty kerroksittain kiekuroita eri värisillä ja tyyppisillä kynillä. Katso lisää upeita ideoita Päivin kotisivuilta Peony and Parakeet!

More backgrounds I made in that workshop / Lisää taustoja Päivin kurssilta:

In the next one, the background is acrylic/watercolour paint on a tea package with a non-traditional coloured leopard pattern. / Seuraava tausta on maalattu teepaketin pahville, josta vähän kuultaa läpi pinkki-turkoosi-keltainen leopardikuvio.

And the last background is painted with acrylics, using an old credit card to spread the paint. / Ja viimeinen on maalattu akryylimaaleilla, tekniikalla, jossa maali puristetaan suoraan paperille ja levitetään summamutikassa vanhan pankkikortin avulla.

Happy Valentine's Day to you all! / Hyvää ystävänpäivää kaikille!

Valentine's Day Mail Art

Here in Finland, we don't traditionally celebrate Valentine's Day, and when I was asked to create a love themed chunky 4x4 page for this holiday, it was a bit of a challenge. Then I remembered this love themed quote that I have always liked, by the author of the Little Prince, and had the idea of cutting the two faces from this paper with old script-looking pattern.

Meillä Suomessa ystävänpäivän sisältö on sen verran erilainen, että rakkausaiheinen Valentinen päivän sivu tuntui alkuun hiukan haastavalta aiheelta. Sitten sain idean Pikku Prinssin kirjoittajan lausahduksesta, josta etenkin nuorempana tykkäsin kovasti:

While I haven't made a lot of other love themed cards, I've always really liked hearts, so this envelope was very easy to come up with. I started with the large heart, stamped with red embossing powder, that I had made previously but didn't find a use for. I liked it better when I coloured the background black, and decided to emphasize the grungy look by using a graffiti themed background stamp. I wanted to add more hearts in very different textures. With the leather-looking handmade paper and some loose woven burlap fabric, I'm quite happy how it turned out!

See you again tomorrow for more Valentine's Day projects! / Tervetuloa kurkkaamaan lisää ystävänpäiväaiheesta huomenna!
