Mixed Media Greenhouse ATCs

Hello springtime, flowers and greenery! To welcome the new season, I enjoyed joining a Greenhouse swap at ATCs for All. This was a mixed media swap and another cool twist was that the cards were to be actually house shaped. They were so much fun to make and I can't wait to see the returns I get!



I was inspired by the following challenges:

For the spring themed challenges, the inspiration is quite obvious, I guess! As for Simon's Layer it Up challenge, I actually tried something new with layering. I'll get back to that a bit further down!



In all the four cards, I began cutting the background and roof from different papers. I included both DIY papers, like Gelli prints, and scrapbook papers and magazine pages.



I then added collage elements like postage stamps, washi tape, magazine cuts...



And some colour with Gelatos and Crayola crayons.





And then to the last layer! I had done some stamping on tissue paper and other nearly see-through papers earlier this week. I've been wanting to build a pre-made stash for beeswax collage, which is where I have previously used stamping on tissue. The thing is that the paper becomes invisible with wet media, and only the stamping shows. This is a cool way to add stamping on surfaces where the stamping ink alone might not show very well, or might bleed, depending on what you're going to add next.



I usually only make beeswax collage when I can dedicate a whole day or longer stretch of time for it, since it takes a while to take the supplies out and clean afterwards. Mainly it is that I use the same ironing board that I use for clothers so I need to cover it properly before I get started. Anyway, I'm glad I thought of using the stamped tissue in another way! And acrylic medium worked in a similar way as beeswax - the paper seems to completely disappear.

Remember that for both beeswax and acrylic medium, the stamping ink has to be permanent! I always use Staz-On.

What a Zetti Christmas!

Hello to you all! I'm the kind of Christmas person who likes to linger in the Christmas mood until it's New Year's Day - and more so if I'm on holiday and don't need to work in the days between. So here's still some Christmas themed crafts being posted - I hope you don't mind!



This set of ATCs was inspired by a swap titled Zetti Christmas. Zetti is a quirky, whimsical art style named by artist Teesha Moore, where some of the typical elements are: mismatched heads, eyes and limbs, funny hats and other circus/party gear, plus colourfulness combined with black and white, especially stripes and polka dots, and so on.



I've only tried to work in zetti style a few times and am not always happy with how it turns out, but I think it's a very fun exercise for a collagist nevertheless! It helps me to think of paper scraps in terms of forms, instead of what the scrap is intended to depict.

I'm not sure if I can explain it very well, but I'll try: For a collage character's -dress, for example, the easy choice would be to look for an image of a dress to cut and paste, but if I think like Zetti, I would have to pick a totally different item instead, and make it the dress. Or a body, or a head, or any part. It's quite liberating for the mind, I think, and a lot of fun!

Summer of Color, Week 5: Red, Royal Blue and Light Blue

The fun challenges at Summer of Color are nearing the end, as it's the week five out of six now. That said, there's still plenty of time to join this week and again with the new palette next week. This is a super welcoming community where all sorts of art and crafts are welcome!

I made these two ATCs with used postage stamps.



Summer of Color -sivustolla ilmestyvä kiva kesäinen värihaasteiden sarja lähenee loppuaan, sillä tämän viikon paletti on viides kuudesta. Vielä on kuitenkin hyvin aikaa osallistua sekä tämän että tietysti ensi viikon tehtäviin!

Tämän viikon väreistä, punaisesta ja tumman- ja vaaleansinisestä syntyi kaksi ATC-korttia käytetyistä postimerkeistä. SOC on lämminhenkinen yhteisö, jonne kaiken sorttiset luomukset ovat tervetulleita, korteista ja skräppäyksistä maalauksiin ja yhtä lailla neule- ja virkkuutöihin. Olen saanut kivoja uusia tuttavuuksia tätä kautta, unohtamatta sitä, että palkinnot ovat hyvät - kannattaa kurkata!

Mixed Media Hearts for Design Memory Craft Challenge

Happy Valentine's Day again, with one more project! This is for the Valentine's Day themed challenge at Design Memory Craft. As usually, all kinds of projects are allowed in this challenge, and I wanted to make a three-dimensional one for a change. I had these pre-made cardboard hearts to decorate, and started by painting over the kraft coloured figures with several layers of white gesso.



Välillä on hauskaa tehdä jotain kolmiulotteista, ja ajattelin, että voisihan ystävänpäivää vartenkin olla oma pieni koristeensa. Design Memory Craftin haasteet ovat avoimia kaiken sorttisille projekteille, ja päätin osallistua ystävänpäiväaiheiseen haasteeseen tekemällä koristeen valmiista pahvipohjasydämistä. Maalasin ne ensin pariin kertaan gessolla peittääkseni ruskean taustavärin.

This was the first time I tried a Stamper's Big Brush Pen for the exact purpose of stamping, and it worked out really well. The pattern did not print perfectly, though, because of the uneven surface, but I don't mind that in a background .

I coloured the corners with Art Grip Aquarelle pencils and gave one heart a bit more of a pink shade. I took some used postage stamps with flowers, mounted them on small pieces of black dot patterned paper and used a piece of washi tape behind the images.



Big Brush -tussit on tarkoitettu myös leimailukäyttöön, ja kokeilin niitä nyt ensi kertaa siihen. Hyvin toimii! Kuviota ei tullut tasaisesti kaikkialle, koska sydämen reunat ovat hieman kohollaan, mutta minua ei pieni epätasaisuus taustassa haittaa ollenkaan.

Väritin Art Grip -vesivärikynillä reunat ja toista sydäntä vähän keskeltäkin. Vesisäiliösivellin on tosi kätevä vesivärikynän jäljen levittämiseen; sitä käyttäessä ei tarvitse erillistä sivellintä ja vesiastiaa.

The hearts had brown strings too short to hang them like I wanted to, so I attached a longer black ribbon by sewing some stitches and using some Tacky Glue to make sure it sticks. Finally I glued a small red crystal bead to cover the ends of the ribbon.



Sydänten keskelle löytyi kuviksi pari kukka-aiheista postimerkkiä, joiden taustalle laitoin palaset pilkullista mustanruskeaa paperia ja pätkän washiteippiä. Alkuperäiset ripustusnauhat olivat liian lyhyet, joten lisäsin mustan ripustusnauhan muutamalla pistolla alkuperäiseen ripustimeen ommellen, ja varmuuden vuoksi kiinnitin vielä nauhan päät tujakalla Tacky Glue -liimalla. Lopuksi peitin nauhan päät punaisella kristallihelmellä. Ja näin ovikoriste on valmis!

My One Word for 2014: Now

After several weeks with no time for scrapbooking, I was really excited to make this last minute layout with three challenges in mind!

First of all, the Berry71bleu challenge was to choose one word to represent one's hopes and goals for the new year. I had many good words on my mind but settled finally for the word Now. For me, it includes many of the other words and ideas I considered first. It can mean being more present, listening to others more, enjoying the moment and not leaving so many things for later.

For a while already, I’d been wanting to try making the layout title from the photo itself. Now I had a short title in mind, so I decided to give it a try and took some photos just for this purpose one morning on my way from home. I’m quite happy with how it turned out! There was more room for embellishments and yet more empty space left than usually, when both the photo and the title take up a lot of the space.

Olipa kivaa skräpätä monen viikon tauon jälkeen, ja ehdin jopa viime hetkellä mukaan kolmeen haasteeseen, joita silmällä pitäen tämän leiskan tein!

Berry71bleun haasteen aiheena oli uuden vuoden toiveita tai tavoitteita kuvaava yksi sana. Pohdin montaa sanaa, joita yhdisti halu olla enemmän läsnä, nauttia hetkestä, tulla paremmaksi kuuntelijaksi ja jättää vähemmän asioita kesken. Sitten keksin sanan Nyt, ja se tuntui heti oikealta, koska minusta siinä yhdistyy kaikki edellä mainitut mietteeni.

Kun otsikko oli kerrankin valmiiksi päätetty ja lyhyt, oli hyvä tilaisuus kokeilla otsikon leikkaamista valokuvasta, mitä olen halunnut kokeilla jo jonkin aikaa. Olen aika tyytyväinen lopputulokseen! Sivulle jäi tavallista helpommin tilaa koristeille ja silti myös avaruutta, kun ei tarvinnut varata tilaa sekä kuvalle että otsikolle.
At Scrap Africa, the challenge theme was one of my favourites: recycling. On my layout, the main recycled thing is the large flower made of book pages. I also like to use postage stamps as embellishments, so that's another 2nd hand item!

Scrap African haasteena oli kierrätys, yksi suosikkiaiheeni! Pääasiallinen kierrätysaines tässä on kirjan sivut, joista iso kukka on tehty. Tykkään käyttää myös käytettyjä postimerkkejä, joten niitäkin pääsi mukaan pari kappaletta koristeeksi.
Last but not least, I'm also entering the 123 Get Scrappy challenge, with the bingo row of old book page, the colour blue and stars! Once I started adding the stars I almost couldn’t stop, because I realized I had so many nice ones and all very different.

I wish you all a nice weekend! I hope you get to enjoy a nice weather outside or if not that, cozy crafting moments. Here in Southern Finland it’s snowing quite a lot right now, so the latter option might be the one for me!

Kolmas haaste oli aina bingomuotoon laadittu 123 Get Scrappy. Siinä siis valitaan itselle mieluisa rivi 3x3 rivin ruudukosta. Minun valintani oli kirjansivuja, sinistä väriä ja tähtiä. Tähtiä tulikin montaa sorttia, kun muistin aina vain lisää jotain erilaista kivaa koristetta. Joitain niistä, kuten noita Facebook-kirppikseltä hankittuja puunappeja en ollut vielä aiemmin käyttänytkään!

Hyvää viikonloppua, toivottavasti joko talviulkoilun merkeissä tai jos kovasti pyryttää, sisällä mukavasti askarrellen!

Pumpkin Themed Mail Art for 3rd Eye Challenge

Now it's already November 1st, but I hope nobody minds that I'll probably keep on with some Halloween themed posts during the rest of this weekend! I hope you're all having a great holiday, those who celebrate it.

Pumpkins belong to Halloween but thats' not all they are to me. I think they represent the whole harvest season and are a beautiful example of the colours we get to enjoy in the fall season!

Mail Art With Quirky Torn Paper Faces

This week's theme at Take a Word is Mail Art. I'm really glad I didn't miss that, because I do quite a bit of mail art for trade at the ATCs for All community. There's an ongoing swap with new partners assigned for every month, so I can be sure to find a piece of art in my mailbox frequently!

I think these gals must be pirates that got a bit carried away by the jewellery they'd taken! I continue to be inspired by the idea of Quirky Torn Paper Faces, which was the theme of another ATCs for All swap earlier this year.



Take a Word -haasteessa viikon aihe on Mail Art. Useimmiten se tarkoittaa pieneksi taideteokseksi muokattua kirjekuorta tai postikorttia, joka on siis koristeltu päältäpäin kaikkien nähtäväksi. Joskus sanaa käytetään kyllä muistakin postitse vaihdeltavista askartelutuotoksista. Olen mukana ATCs for All -yhteisön jatkuvassa vaihdossa, jossa lähetetään yksi tällainen kirjekuori joka kuukausi uudelle vaihtokumppanille, joten omaankin postilaatikkoon tupsahtaa jotain kaunista säännöllisesti!

Olipa taas hauska tehdä näitä hullunkurisia kasvoja! Alkuperäinen idea on aiemmasta ATCs for All -vaihdosta, johon tehdyt korttini löytyvät täältä. Merirosvonaiset tässä ihastelevat korusaaliitaan ja nauttivat elämästään myrskyävällä merellä!

Guilty Pleasures: My Yarn Stash // Kilokaupalla lankaa

This is for Once Upon a Stash, no, I mean Once Upon a Sketch! The June theme was Guilty Pleasures, and mine is definitely the madness for craft products. Yarn is something I have not only bought but also inherited from grandmothers and received from others − that is, from people who are wise enough to sort out their stash every once in a while!



I'm also entering this in Let's Get Trendy Now 3: Handmade Embellishments. In this layout I've used mainly handmade embellies. Firstly, there are the fuzzy cut flowers (Reprint from Basic Grey's Out of Print collection) and the oriental looking pine branch from our new wallpaper (Borås Soul) that also shows in the background of the photo. Then there's the handmade journaling tag, the swirl of fluffy yarn glued on the paper, and some punch-out flowers and used postage stamps for a final touch.

Otan tällä leiskalla osaa kahteen haasteeseen: Once Upon a Sketchissä piti paljastaa jokin salainen paheensa. Minun aiheekseni sopi lankojen hamstraus, koska olin äskettäin kerännyt ympäriinsä pyörivät vyyhdet yhteen ja todennut, että ne täyttivät helposti yhden matkalaukun!

Let's Get Trendy 3 -haastetehtävänä oli itse tehdyt koristeet. Käytin ensinnäkin paperin leikkelyä: isot kukat ovat Basic Greyn Reprint-paperista ja itämainen männynoksa uudesta tapetistamme nimeltä Borås Soul, joka näkyy valokuvan taustallakin. Tagi on niin ikään itse tehty, ja viimeistelin työn lankakiekuralla, kuvioleikkurin pikkukukilla ja muutamalla postimerkillä.

Being from within the EU, I didn't even need to think of the customs and tax limits like I always do when ordering from the USA.

Dare to Set Goals: An Art Journal Page

This journal page is inspired by the Design Memory Craft challenge with the following question: "What one important lesson have you learnt this year so far or what one theme has stood out for you?" I decided on the theme of daring and particularly, daring to set concrete goals.

Daring to dream is really important, but at some point one needs to think out ways to make those dreams come true, too! And figure out which dreams I wish to fulfill in the next year or three, and which ones can happily wait till later on. Not all dreams need to come true, I think. It's better to have too many than too few!



Unelmista tavoitteiksi

Tämän art journal -aukeaman lähtökohtana oli Design Memory Craft -haasteen esittämä kysymys, minkä tärkeän viisauden on oppinut kuluneen vuoden aikana. Itse halusin tässä pukea sanoiksi sen, miten on tärkeää uskaltaa muodostaa unelmista myös konkreettisia tavoitteita.

Kaikkien unelmien ei minusta tarvitse toteutua ikinä ja niitä on parempi olla liikaa kuin liian vähän. Mutta ne, joiden haluaa toteutuvan lähitulevaisuudessa, on hyvä muotoilla selkeiksi pyrkimyksiksi.

My favourite journal at the moment is this little 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches Hahnemühle Travel Booklet, which I carry about everywhere. The paper is thick and good, but the only lack I now noticed was that it does not take watercolours very well. I did not have the gesso with me, else I could have started with giving it a coat.

I drew an ornamental circle with watercolour pencils. I found at our cottage an old yellowed plastic doily ugliness that made a great stencil. But when I added water, the paper started to break. When dry, I collaged some stamped paper onto to the most worn out parts of the spread.

When I got home, I gessoed it before applying acrylic paints. The stencil I used here is Honeycomb from The Crafters' Workshop. The ornament stamp came with a magazine, I think, and the one with the leaves is from an unknown origin, while the chevron one is made by me. I added some washi tape, postage stamps and ephemera for the finishing touch and did the lettering with a Promarker.



Tämä pieni (9x14 cm) Hahnemühlen matkakirjanen kulkee minulla melkein kaikkialle, joten siihen tulee myös tehtyä enemmän kuin suurempiin. Ostin noita Temperasta kahden pakkauksissa. Linkki on Helsingin Uudenmaankadun myymälään, sillä heidän verkkokaupastaan en tätä tuotetta löytänyt.

Mökiltä löytynyt rumilus, muovinen pitsiliina, oli hyvä piirustussabluuna vesivärikynille. Paperi on paksua ja hyvän tuntuista, mutta vesiväri olisi vaatinut gessokerroksen alleen. Vesi alkoi kuluttaa paperia rikki, joten lisäsin niihin kohtiin leimattua paperia. Gessoa levitin tähän väliin ennen akryylimaaleja.

Akryyleilla sabluunana oli The Crafters' Workshopin Honeycomb. Lehtileimasimen valmistajaa en tiedä, ja nuolileimasin on itse tehty. Kirjoitin viisaudet Promarker-tussilla ja viimeistelin aukeaman washiteipillä ja muutamalla postimerkillä.

The Entertainer

My First Altered Playing Card (APC)

I recently made an Altered Playing Card for a trade and have been wanting to make some for my own collection, too. My deck will be themed Postage Stamps of Famous Women.

When I saw that this week's theme for Collage Obsession was Entertainers, I knew right away I wanted to do Marlene Dietrich in the film Morocco, true entertainment style with the top hat and all! I remembered I had a stamp of her in my stash, and printed a black and white picture to go with it.



Here's my 8 of Clubs with Marlene Dietrich. The stamp is mounted on a leftover pink paper with gold embossed decoration, and the see-through oriental flower background is a decoupaged napkin.


APCs are often collected with a purpose of getting the whole deck in one theme. I had been thinking of a theme for a while but when I heard of someone collecting this theme, Postage Stamps of Famous Women, I knew that was what I wanted to collect. I asked my trading partner to make sure she didn't mind my copying the idea, but she was just glad to hear I'd loved it.

I had lots of foreign penpals as a school girl and ever since, I've found it exciting how much you can learn from postage stamps. Not only are they often beautifully designed, they can tell you many things about their countries. Who are the women that are honoured in postage stamps, and what did they do to make their mark in the history books?
