Tervetuloa kurssille: Kangas, sakset, paperi!

Hello! Today's post will be in Finnish, about my coming workshops.

Moi! Opetan taas tänä keväänä mixed media -askarteluja Vantaan aikuisopistossa. Kurssiohjelma on uudistunut ja ajattelin siksi tehdä pienen esittelypostauksen kustakin kurssista erikseen.

Kevätkauden ensimmäinen kurssi on nimeltään Kangas, sakset, paperi! Tämä kurssi on toista kertaa ohjelmassa ja se sopii sekä sekatekniikka-askartelun aloittajalle että pidempään harrastaneelle. Mixed median perusasioista mm. leimailu sekä sabluunoiden ja akryylimaalien käyttö tulevat viimeistään nyt tutuiksi, jos et ole tehnyt niitä aiemmin!

Kurssipaikka on Vantaan opistotalo Tikkurilassa, Lummetie 5, ja kurssi-illat ovat maanantaisin 21.1.−11.2.2019 klo 17−21.



Kurssilla tutustumme eri tapoihin käyttää lankaa ja kangasta oman askartelutyylin lisämausteena. Kerroksellisuuden rakentamista ja yksityiskohtien lisäämistä voi tehdä oman mieltymyksen mukaan ompelukoneella, käsin kirjoen tai helposti ja nopeasti liimaamalla.

Tässä syntyy minialbumi päällystämällä suodatinpusseja itse koristelluilla papereilla. Pussin ympäri siksakkaus ompelukoneella tekee saumasta kestävämmän ja aukko muodostaa kivan taskun, johon voi tallentaa lisää pieniä muistoja.



Tällä kurssilaisella oli upea vanha puutarha-aiheinen kirja, johon hän päätti valmistaa taskuja vanhojen kukkapostikorttien kokoelmaansa varten.





Tässä on käsin kirjoen koristeltu tasku journaling tägille ja muita yksityiskohtia, tyylikkäästi vintage-kuvan kanssa yhteen sopien!

ATCs with Hearts of Collage, Stitches and Yarn

Hi! This set of ATCs is for a Heart Collage themed swap at ATCs for All.



I got so excited with collage work with the background that I didn't want to cover it up completely. Thus the sown thread heart that allows the background to show a bit! I made the background with really small bits and pieces, used a couple shades of green mists to colour it and was quite happy with the result! I did use some white crayon for the hearts to pop out a bit more.



My background paper was not too thick so I mounted the collage onto scrapbooking paper. Torn edges and machine stitches are good for a shabby look, I think.



I was inspired by the May colour palette at Tando Creative − although I went with slightly darker shades.

Storm: An Art Journal Page

Hello there!

We're getting near the end of January, and though I've had less art time than I would like lately, I'm enjoying the Documented Life Project 2016: the UnPlanner online workshop and community. This is the first time I've signed up for a full year's online course, so let's see how well I can keep up!

I know already that I won't have time to join all the challenges, but the most important thing for me is to create and journal regularly, even if it's in my own pace.



The UnPlanner prompt for the second week of January was: Start with a quote and paint over all but one word.



"The greater the storm, the brighter the rainbow." I got the quote and the idea for this page from the January challenge at Viva Las VegaStamps!

I'm not saying that the quote goes for people in the face of truly great adversity: war, exile and poverty, to name but a few. It can be insensitive to just cheer someone to be optimistic in a situation where concrete help is all they need.

But the way I saw it, describing a certain kind of personality, I quite like the quote. My eldest and I are both sort of quick tempered and can have very strong reactions in our times of distress, but equally in our times of happiness and gratitude. So that's the way I interpreted the storm and the rainbow this time.



The inspiration board (above) was accompanied by this list of words: resolutions, one little words, pacts and more.../and also/... words like femininity, women, exploration, rainbow, neutral and nature, storm, maps, vintage, writing, script, yellows, tans, black and white, stripes, bold, rainbows, storms and more!

I chose to highlight women (girls), exploration, storm, script, stripes (the "One Way" arrows represent these), and for the colours, a combination of neutrals and some black and white.



I built my journal page on a previously Gelli printed paper, and machine stiched it onto a kraft cardstock cut to the size of my binder page. All but the script stamp are from Viva Las VegaStamps!

I stenciled the clouds with black acrylic paint through a DIY stencil I made with my Fiskars Squeeze Punch. Once the paint had dried, I put the stencil back in place stamped the script with white ink.

As for the anchor stamp, I was just experimenting patterns with it, thinking of a naval theme in connection to the storm, when I saw that from a distance the little anchors looked like birds flying away. So I stamped them around the girl as if she was releasing them from her hand.



The view where I photographed my page is from Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki, an old cable factory turned to a huge center of arts and culture. I'm lucky to take two weekly courses there this spring. This gorgeous view is from the art class where I study experimental techniques in acrylic painting, and the other course is painting with toddlers. I'm sure you'll hear more about these in my later posts!

The view doesn't show very clearly on a cloudy/snowy day like this, but right next to the building there's the sea, now covered with ice. And behind that, the city continues on an island. You can see the bridge on the bottom right corner.

August Light: Layout for Scrap Africa DT

Hello! Here's my layout for the mid-month mood board challenge at Scrap Africa!



And here's what the mood board looks like:



I was inspired by the abundance of flowers and the colours, and also the combination of different typographies in the heart, which suggested using two different sort of alphabet in my title. One word is written by hand and and another with alphabet that I cut from corrugated cardboard.

Another inspiration to my layout was the mood board at Scrap Around the World:



Here I was inspired by the combination of pink and natural colours, the handwriting and the twine. I didn't feel like using dark brown this time, but the dark green handmade paper that I used to mat my photo sort of reminded me of the worn out leather covers of the old book in the mood board.



With this layout, I'm also joining the Archi-Scraps challenge, with the theme of Layers and/or corrugated cardboard!

I had wanted to use corrugated cardboard alphabet since I saw them in a layout by Terhi Koskinen recently. Do check out her work if you haven't already done so, she's one of Finland's best known scrapbookers and for a good reason!

Fiskarettes DT: Cards with AdvantEdge Border Punch

Hello all, and happy September! The new month also means the end of my 4 month post as a DT member at Fiskarettes Finland. I'm a bit behind in posting my DT projects here on the blog, so I'm showing a couple today!

For both of these cards, I have used borders cut with Fiskars' new AdvantEdge border puncher. In this Thank you card, I painted the border first with an acrylic paint in a shade called Payne's Gray, then used some crackle medium and painted with a mix of bronze and gold acrylic paint on top.



Hei vaan, ja hyvää alkanutta syyskuuta! Uuden kuukauden myötä on aika kiittää DT-tehtävästäni Fiskarettesissa. DT-projekteja kerkisi kertyä neljässä kuukaudessa aika pino, kun niitä tehtiin kerran viikossa. Töiden postaaminen tänne blogiin laahaakin vähän perässä, joten tässä tulee pari!

Kiitoskortin kuva on itse ottamani ja käsitelty ilmaisella verkkopohjaisella ohjelmalla nimeltä Pixlr Express. Kultaboordi on leikattu Fiskarsin AdvantEdge-laitteella, ja maalasin sen ensin tummanharmaalla akryylimaalilla, sävyllä nimeltä Payne's Gray, joka on tosi kaunis ja monikäyttöinen. Sen kuivuttua laitoin kerroksen krakleerausainetta ja jälleen odottelin kuivumista, jonka jälkeen maalasin kerroksen kullan ja pronssinvärien sekoituksella.



In this Butterfly ATC, I cut a butterfly from the punched border and embossed one half of it with Sunny Yellow and the other with Metalline Dark Blue from WOW Embossing powders. I attached the butterfly to the background with just the stitching in the middle, to let the wings fly free for some 3D effect.

ATC-kortin perhonen on niin ikään AdvantEdgellä leikatusta boordista. Embossasin sen toisen puolen keltaisella ja toisen metallinsinisellä, ja kiinnitin perhosen korttipohjaan vain keskeltä ompelemalla. Ihanat WOW:n kohojauheet on ostettu Espoon Askartelu Amaliasta!

Second Hand Finds // Kirppislöytöjä

I love making flea market finds and using recycled material in my crafts. In May there was a little flea market at a school next to our home, and I was really excited to finds these two papercraft books. It was actually a crafting friend from the neighbourhood who was selling them, so I have her to thank!

The first book is called Paper: Making, Decorating, Designing. Thackeray, Beata (text) and Hurst, Jacqui (special photography). Conran Octopus, 1997.

The third book is from our equivalent of Ebay (huuto.net) and it cost a tad more than the others. It's a book on fabric printing and though it dates from xxxx, the contents don't seem outdated at all. The patterns actually look quite fashionable again today!

Kolmas löytöni on ajaton kankaanpainanta-aiheinen kirja Huutonetistä. Kuvat ja kuosit kertovat omasta ajastaan, mutta mukana on ihan nykypäivän makuunkin sopivaa! Kirjaa löytyy ainakin täältä, ja usein sitä on kaupan myös Huutonetissä.

In My Flower Garden

The other day, I found yet another cool challenge blog, this time from South Africa! The Scrap Africa challenges run for two weeks each, so I had to hurry a bit to make mine in time! They have both sketch challenges and theme challenges taking turns. This time it was a sketch:



I am also entering this in the Berry71Bleu Challenge with the theme of "What do you most like to do in summer...?" My photo does not feature an activity but I think it's within the theme, representing the peace and quiet of my garden that I really enjoy! I was also inspired by Let's Get Trendy 3, where stitching was the theme of the day.

Kukkaloiston keskellä

Tässä sivussa halusin kuvata puutarhan kukkaloistoa juuri nyt, ja iloa sen äärellä rauhoittuessani. Osallistun tällä Scrap Africa -haasteeseen, joka on minulle uusi tuttavuus Etelä-Afrikasta. Joka toinen viikko on siellä luonnoshaaste ja joka toinen viikko muunlainen. Olipa mukavan erilainen luonnos, ja kirjekuoren muotoinen asettelu oli kiva tapa yhdistää kahta paperia!

Osallistun tällä työllä myös Berry71Bleun haasteeseen, jossa kysyttiin mieluisinta puuhaa kesällä, ja Let's Get Trendy 3 -haasteeseen, jonka aihe oli ompelemalla koristelu.

Beeswax Part II: Use It for the Background

When I first tried beeswax in a collage, I instantly loved the transparent look of the layers. However, with ordinary paper it did not work as well as with napkins, or other porous papers that let the melted wax go through.

This time I wanted to use beeswax for the background only, and add the rest of the collage elements later. For sewing themed cards, I chose recycled clothes patterns. The paper sort is similar to tissue paper, so it worked very well. I pasted it on yellow-green pearlescent cardstock with beeswax and cut to ATC size when dry.

The sewing machine is a free download from Missie Krissie's blog. I printed it on pink and green scrapbooking papers. Spring colours seemed a good choice, when we're finally getting some sun!

Before adding the image, I stamped around the corners with Staz-on permanent ink. Last but not least I made a simple flower of fabric scraps to brighten it up.



ATC-korttipohja mehiläisvahatekniikalla

Ihastuin heti ensikokeilulla mehiläisvahakollaasin läpinäkyvään vaikutelmaan. Siihen sopivat parhaiten vahaa läpäisevät paperit, kuten silkkipaperi ja servietit. Tällä kertaa kokeilin käyttää mehiläisvahatekniikkaa vain taustaksi ja kiinnittää loput kollaasielementit myöhemmin.

Ompeluaiheinen kortti syntyi kivasti kierrätetystä vaatekaavasta, jonka paperi on juuri oikeanlaista silkkipaperin tyyppistä. Postikortin kokoisesta pohjasta tuli kaksi ATC-korttia. Leimailin sinne tänne Staz-on-musteella, joka kestää kiiltävillä pinnoilla varmimmin. Ompelukone on vapaasti ladattava kuva Missie Krissie -blogista. Muutin kokoa sopivaksi ja tulostin sitä kahdelle erilaiselle skräppipaperille. Pirteänä viimeistelynä toimivat tilkkulaatikon aarteista tehdyt kukat. Aurinkoisia kevättalven päiviä kaikille!
