Smell the Sea and Feel the Sky: Layout for Scrap Africa

Happy February everyone!

It's sketch time again at Scrap Africa.



I always love a sketch with hexagon shapes! But if you don't, no problem. You don't have to interpret the sketch as literally as I did. Do check out what the other super inspiring DT members created here!



I wanted to use a previously Gelli printed paper for my background, and was also feeling like using a dark background to go with the dark wooden wall in my photo. So I took a dark gre/brown polka dot paper from an old Basic Grey collection, and gessoed most of it to fade the transition to the Gelli paper.



Machine stitching is a great way to attach a thick paper onto another. I placed it with small pieces of double sided tape first.



And used the stitching as an embellishment as well.



This was my first time trying the acrylic inks from Daler-Rowney that I got a while ago. The colours are very strong so I used some water not to make too dark spots. I would have wanted the blots a bit bigger, but couldn't think of a tool to try it with. I'd love to hear your favourite tools or techniques are for splashing inks and mists!

The photo is a selfie from our last day in California last June, before returning home to Finland. I am so grateful we got to stay whole two weeks with my sweet relatives. This is from the back yard from their almost-beach house just a few blocks from the ocean.

The title is from the Van Morrison song called Into the Mystic, and it describes so well my feelings at that moment, grateful for the unforgettable trip but knowing I'll miss all the people I met,

and the ocean.

Watercolour Theme at Allt om Scrap

Watercolours and mists are the theme of week at Allt om Scrap. I made my background with a technique where you first paint the paper, let it partly dry and then wipe some of the colour away through a stencil. Baby wipes are the best for this!

Allt om Scrap -sivuston viikon teema on vesivärit ja mistit. Tein taustan tekniikalla, jossa paperi ensin maalataan ja annetaan hieman kuivua. Sitten poistetaan osa maalista sabluunan läpi pyyhkimällä. Vauvan puhdistuspyyhkeet sopivat mainiosti tähän, kuten moneen muuhunkin askartelijan käyttöön!

Allt om Scrap: My Favourite Layout in 2013

This week at Allt om Scrap is dedicated to looking back at the year 2013. What were the most important trends, our favourite embellishments, best scrapbooking memories and favourite layouts during the past year? What are the team's hopes and expectations for the year 2014? It's written in Swedish as usual, but anyone can enjoy looking at the new favourite layouts and other projects published every day this week.

I joined the team in September, so I didn't so much to choose from yet. But this one I am indeed very happy with!



Tällä viikolla Allt om Scrapin tiimi muistelee kulunutta vuotta: Mitkä olivat vuoden suosikkituotteet ja -trendit, ja toisaalta toiveet ja tavoitteet ensi vuodelle? Entä parhaat skräppäysmuistot ja onnistuneimmat leiskat? Kysymykset ja vastaukset ovat tuttuun tapaan ruotsiksi, mutta kuvissakin on katseltavaa, sillä vuoden suosikkitöitä julkaistaan päivittäin.

Minä liityin joukkoon syyskuun alusta, joten DT-töitä ei ole vielä hurjan monta kertynyt. Tämä leiska on aika selkeä valinta suosikiksi. Tiedoksi myös, että Allt om Scrapin design-tiimi etsii parhaillaan uusia jäseniä, joten jos ruotsin taitosi riittää, hae ihmeessä, aikaa on 20.1.2014 asti!

Allt om Scrap is also calling for some new Design Team members among those who can speak Swedish. The call is on until January the 20th. It's a fun and easygoing team, so if you're thinking about it, do send in your application!

Snow Adventure Layout & Flair Buttons Challenge

Hello again!

Here's my layout for the Design Challenge at Allt om Scrap, where the theme this October is flair buttons, also called badges. I just got my first ones, made by the Polish company 3rd Eye, who has a cool variety. It was not so easy to use them, though, but I'll try again for sure.

You're welcome to join the challenge until November the 20th, and of course to check what our Design Team and Guest Designer Michelle Hernandez did! The prize is an assortment of flair buttons from Michelle.

There's also a tutorial for making your own badges, by Design Team member Stephi. It's in Swedish, but with a lot of photos!



Hei taas! Allt om Scrapin lokakuun haasteen aiheena on koristenapit, joita englanniksi kutsutaan nimillä flair buttons tai badges. Ostin tällaisia ihan ekaa kertaa puolalaisen 3rd Eyen verkkokaupasta. Ne ovat siis kuin pieniä pinssejä, mutta takana on hakaneulan sijasta tarra.

Koristenappeja voi muuten tehdä itsekin. Kun ehdin, ajattelin kokeilla näillä ohjeilla, jotka laati Stephi Allt om Scrapin tiimistä. Ohjeet ovat ruotsiksi, mutta runsaan kuvituksen avulla varmaan pärjää vähemmälläkin kielitaidolla!

Haasteeseen voi osallistua 20.11. saakka ja palkintona on vierailevan designerin Michelle Hernandezin lahjoittama sortimentti nappeja!



The sketch and the theme "Journey" are from Once Upon a Sketch. I turned the sketch to suit landscape photos, but wanted to keep the three fairly large photos of the sketch. It wasn't so easy to make the layout work with so much stuff in it. I'm glad I took the challenge, anyway!

The photos are of my son when he was almost one year old, getting to know snow for the first time. It wasn't love at first sight, like it often is for older children, but he still approached it with a curious mind. The journaling in the little envelope is about how he's kept that curiosity while growing up to a boy who'll be six on his next birthday already.



Osallistun samalla Once Upon a Sketch -haasteeseen. Ohessa luonnos, jonka käänsin vaakasuuntaisiin kuviin sopivaksi. Tarinointi on pienessä kirjekuoressa ja tulkitsen siinä väljästi OUAS:in teemaa Matka.

Kuvissa poikani seikkailee ensimmäisiä kertoja lumessa hiukan alle vuoden vanhana. Hän ei ihan päätä pahkaa siihen tainnut ihastua, mutta tutkii silti uteliaana uutta ympäristöä, ja tämä piirre on ilokseni säilynyt. Ajatella, että ensi talvena tämä taapero on jo kuuden ikäinen!

Allt om Scrap Recycling Sunday: Sunflower Field Layout

Scrapbooking may not always be an economical hobby, but there are actually lots of ways to incorporate recycled items in your layout. This Sunday's theme at Allt om Scrap is Recycling, and you're welcome to check the team's tips on having fun with second hand stuff!



Skräppäystä pidetään usein tyyriinä harrastuksena, mutta toisaalta skräppäys on myös mainio tapa käyttää kierrätettyä materiaalia. Säästäminen ja vihreys ovat yksinäänkin riittäviä syitä, mutta moni tykkää myös luovasta ja persoonallisesta jäljestä, jonka kierrättämällä saa. Allt om Scrap -lehden kierrätyssunnuntaissa tiimi esittelee tänä monta kivaa tapaa kotoa löytyvän roinan käyttöön!

My main recycled element were the puzzle pieces I used for the title of the layout. I gessoed them with two layers, then sandpapered a bit and painted them with very light yellow. I then stamped some sunflowers with Distress Ink in Mustard Seed colour. The title means The Sunflower Field in English. I chose a Swedish title this time, being in a Swedish Design Team and also because it's the second language in my family.



Pääasiallinen kierrätystarvikkeeni olivat otsikossa käytetyt palapelin palat. Maalasin niihin pari kerrosta gessoa, siloitin pikkaisen hiekkapaperilla ja maalasin hyvin vaalealla keltaisella. Leimasin auringonkukkia Distress Inkin sävyllä Mustard Seed, ja lopuksi piirsin kirjaimet.

Tein tällä kertaa otsikon ruotsiksi, joka on Allt om Scrapin tiimin kieli mutta myös toinen kieli perheessäni. Solrosängen on suomeksi Auringonkukkapelto, ja tämä kiva kohde kotimme lähellä Espoossa on tullut jokasyksyiseksi pistäytymispaikaksi. Viljelijä ilahduttaa monia, sillä kukkakimpun saa poimia mukaan kotiin hyvin vaatimatonta korvausta vastaan!



In my odd bits and pieces box I also found some ribbon, a button and embroidering yarn to use as embellishments. In the very beginning of this layout, I have also recycled soda can clips and am entering this layout in the Scrap for Help challenge with this theme. Can you see where they are? That´s right, I used them as masks for spraying the green and brown mist in the background. Have a nice Sunday!

Sopivat koristeet löytyivät nappi- ja nauhalaatikon kätköistä, ja kierrätystavaraa käytin myös ihan ensi töikseni kun tätä sivua aloitin. Scrap for Help-haasteessa kuukauden kierrätystarvike oli juomatölkin avausnipsut, ja käytin niitä taustan kuvion luomiseen vihreillä ja ruskeilla misteillä. Mukavaa sunnuntain jatkoa!

London Layout & News of My Scrapbooking Classes!

Hello all! I began my post by sharing some good news to my Finnish readers in particular: I'm teaching my first scrapbooking classes this fall, and I'm really honoured and excited about this opportunity! I've been planning my classes a lot lately, and I'm really sorry that has meant less time for blog updates. Now I finally had time for my first challenge layout this month, and I was inspired by as many as four different challenges!

Tässä vihdoin tämän kuun ensimmäinen haasteleiskani, jolla olenkin mukana kokonaista neljässä haasteessa!



1-2-3-Get Scrappy! is a challenge that just got started this month. The idea is fun and unlike other challenges: each month there's a tic tac toe or bingo board, where you have to pick a row of three ideas for inspiration. I chose hexagons, colour red and brads.

1-2-3-Get Scrappy! on juuri käynnistynyt haasteblogi, jossa on kiva, vähän erilainen idea eli haaste on aina bingoruudukon muodossa. Minun rivini on kuusikulmiot, punainen väri ja haaraniitit.

The colour scheme is from the Color Room palette #156. These colours are very different from what I usually choose, so I really felt like challenging myself with them!

Väripaletti on The Color Room -haasteesta, ja se olikin haastavan erilainen kuin mitä värejä useimmin käytän.



The third challenge that inspired me was the How U Use Challenge at the Mixed Media Place. I used heat embossing in a few different ways here. First of all, I used two different flower stamps with white embossing powder in the background before I applied some acrylic paints and mists.

Kolmas haaste oli Mixed Media Place -blogissa, jossa kysyttiin, millä tavoin itse kukin käyttää kohokuviointia. Aloitin leimaamalla taustapaperiin kahta erilaista kukkakuviota, joihin käytin valkoista embossausjauhetta. Sen jälkeen maalailin päälle hiukan akryylimaalia ja mistejä, jolloin kukat tulevat paremmin näkyviin.





I also embossed one of the same stamp patterns, but in black this time, to make my own patterned paper for the hexagons. // Tein kuusikulmioita varten omaa kuviopaperia samalla kukkaleimasimella kuin aiemmin käytin, mutta mustalla värillä.



The third embossed thing is the London tag that also serves as the title of the layout. I put some gesso on this pink patterned chipboard tag, then some acrylic paints using punchinella as a stencil, and finally embossed the Big Ben stamp with black powder.



Kolmas asia, johon käytin kohojauheita, on Lontoo-aiheinen tagi. Levitin ensin hiukkasen gessoa pinnalle, niin että painettu vaaleanpunainen kuvio kuitenkin näkyy hiukkasen läpi. Töpötin vähän akryylimaalia punchinella-palasen läpi ja lopuksi leimasin Big Benin mustan kohojauheen kera. Leiska ei mielestäni kaipaa erillistä otsikkoa, vaan tagi saa toimittaa senkin virkaa.



Last but not least, thanks to Scrap Africa for the sketch! I've used them a few times lately and like them a lot. // Luonnos löytyi taas Scrap African haasteesta, joihin olen viime aikoina tykästynyt!



The photo is of my sister on our trip to England in 2006. We've travelled a lot together, especially before each of us had children, and hopefully in the future too! I love it when I scrap travel pictures, I get to enjoy the fun memories once again. Who do you like to travel with?

Kuvassa on siskoni yhteisellä Englannin matkalla 2006. Hänen kanssaan ollaan reissattu yhdessä paljon, etenkin ennen kuin kumpikin sai lapsia... ja toivottavasti taas joskus! Matkakuvia on niin kiva skräpätä, samalla voi uppoutua mukaviin muistoihin aina uudelleen. Kenen kanssa itse tykkäät matkustella?

In Summer Rain

Hi again! I´m sorry my blog´s been quiet so long. I planned to take a week or two off later this summer, but I didn't plan to be gone so long just yet. Well, you know how it is, life just gets in the way sometimes!

Hei taas, ja pahoittelut pitkästä hiljaisuudesta! Myöhemmin kesällä olin aikonut pitää pienen tauon, kun ollaan perheen kesken kesälomareissuilla. Tässä vaiheessa ei kylläkään vielä ollut tarkoitus olla näin pitkään poissa kuvioista, mutta joskus muut kiireet vain vievät voiton.



This quick layout was really fun to do, inspired by the challenges at Scrap Africa (Sketch 19) and Scrap for Help, where the prompt was to use bubble wrap.



Tämä sivu syntyi nopeasti Scrap African kivan luonnoksen pohjalta. Siitä sain myös meriaiheisen teeman ja idean käyttää kirjan sivuja leiskan taustalla. Osallistun tällä myös Scrap for Help -haasteeseen, jossa tehtävänä oli käyttää kuplamuovia tavalla tai toisella.

I used the bubble wrap with embossing ink and embossing powders in white, clear and a tiny bit of metallic blue. I thought of raindrops when I did this pattern, spraying it with blue and turquoise coloured mists after the heat embossing. Finally I sprayed some water to make the mists bleed a bit more. I was also inspired by the seaside theme and the use of book pages in the Scrap Africa sketch.

Leimasin kuplamuovilla embossausmustetta ja käytin siihen valkoista, kirkasta ja hippusen metallinsinistä kohojauhetta. Ajattelin sadepisaroiden ja valuvan veden kuvioita, kun lisäsin taustaan sinistä ja sinivihreää mistiä. Lopuksi suihkuttelin pelkkää vettä, millä sain aikaan ikäänkuin valuvan sateen jäljet.

The photos are from the summer of 2011, when my son was three years old. My cousin and her two little ones were on a day trip with us and while they napped in the car, we took a walk in this little harbour to look at the boats. Luckily, he was well prepared for the rain!

Kuvat ovat kesältä 2011, jolloin poikani oli kolmevuotias. Hän ja minä lähdimme satamaan katselemaan veneitä sillä välin kun serkkuni lapset jäivät päiväunille autoon äitinsä kanssa. Onneksi oltiin hyvin varauduttu sateeseen!

Guilty Pleasures: My Yarn Stash // Kilokaupalla lankaa

This is for Once Upon a Stash, no, I mean Once Upon a Sketch! The June theme was Guilty Pleasures, and mine is definitely the madness for craft products. Yarn is something I have not only bought but also inherited from grandmothers and received from others − that is, from people who are wise enough to sort out their stash every once in a while!



I'm also entering this in Let's Get Trendy Now 3: Handmade Embellishments. In this layout I've used mainly handmade embellies. Firstly, there are the fuzzy cut flowers (Reprint from Basic Grey's Out of Print collection) and the oriental looking pine branch from our new wallpaper (Borås Soul) that also shows in the background of the photo. Then there's the handmade journaling tag, the swirl of fluffy yarn glued on the paper, and some punch-out flowers and used postage stamps for a final touch.

Otan tällä leiskalla osaa kahteen haasteeseen: Once Upon a Sketchissä piti paljastaa jokin salainen paheensa. Minun aiheekseni sopi lankojen hamstraus, koska olin äskettäin kerännyt ympäriinsä pyörivät vyyhdet yhteen ja todennut, että ne täyttivät helposti yhden matkalaukun!

Let's Get Trendy 3 -haastetehtävänä oli itse tehdyt koristeet. Käytin ensinnäkin paperin leikkelyä: isot kukat ovat Basic Greyn Reprint-paperista ja itämainen männynoksa uudesta tapetistamme nimeltä Borås Soul, joka näkyy valokuvan taustallakin. Tagi on niin ikään itse tehty, ja viimeistelin työn lankakiekuralla, kuvioleikkurin pikkukukilla ja muutamalla postimerkillä.

Knit pattern stencil by That Special Touch and the Cosmic Shimmer Mists were my first online purchase at the UK located Joanna Sheen company. To advertise just a little, this was a very good deal, because Joanna Sheen has free delivery worldwide for orders over £9. Being from within the EU, I didn't even need to think of the customs and tax limits like I always do when ordering from the USA.

The Color Room #151: Icicle Time

Right now, I’m so into colour challenges that when the new palette appeared at The Color Room, I wanted to make a new layout right away. Another challenge I gave myself was to finish the layout in one evening, and that I almost managed to do. The journaling and titles I finished the following day.

Innostuin värihaasteista niin, että halusin heti taas osallistua, kun The Color Room -blogin uusi värisuora julkaistiin. Haastoin lisäksi itseni tekemään sivun yhdessä illassa valmiiksi. Ihan ei se tavoite pitänyt, mutta seuraavalle päivälle jäi vain otsikko ja tarinointi.



Here’s how I started to pick papers I might want to use. Not all of them were included in the end!

Aloitin levittämällä pöytään reilusti papereita, joiden värit voisivat mahdollisesti sopia. Kaikkia en käyttänyt, ja jotain muuta tuli tilalle.



The lovely Finnish-language weekday stamp by the Sodalicious girls was especially made for the kit at their Helsinki, Finland workshop this April, and its' quickly becoming one of my favourites. I wish you all a nice week and summer sunshine, despite of my wintery layout!

Suomenkielinen viikonpäiväleima on Sodaliciousin Annan ja Jaszmurkan varta vasten teettämä workshoppiin, jonka he pitivät viime kuun Intohimoa Skräppäyksestä -tapahtumassa. Se taitaa päästä mukaan melkein joka sivulleni nykyään. Talvisesta leiskan aiheesta huolimatta, hyvää ja kesäistä viikkoa kaikille!

Mixed Media Background with Stamp, Stencil & Book Pages

I’m joining two challenges with this layout:

Inkido, where the challenge was to use stenciling and stamping for the background, and Scrap for Help, where book pages were the thing of the month.



This will be a title page for a travel album, so there is no journaling. I printed the photo in black and white to highlight the skyline and the ironwork on the bridge rail.



I also wanted to try making my own embellishments from scratch. I made the book page flower first, starting from this yoghurt foil lid with a pretty flower pattern.



The lid was like this, but a different colour.

I used decorative scissors to cut circles of book pages in different sizes. Then, to accentuate the borders, I coloured them with a pearlescent chalk ink and Promarkers.



I liked the look of the scraps that were left after cutting the circles, so I decided to use these as well. I glued them onto the page and then used similar circles for one more thing: stenciling partial circles. For this, I used first Distress Inks and then acrylic paints for more vivid colours.



The two other flowers I cut from scraps of my mixed media experiments. The puzzle pieces were first gessoed and then painted with acrylics. Lastly, I wrote the year with a white gel pen.

Let's Soak up the Sun

This layout is my take on the March challenges at Once Upon a Sketch (OUAS), where the theme was Weekend, and Inkido, with the theme of the Great Outdoors.

I enjoy long walks when winter is getting close to spring and even we in the Nordic countries get to enjoy the warmth of the sun again. This winter had been cloudy so far and we’d also been busy renovating a bedroom. So the best chance to enjoy a walk next to the frozen seafront was on a weekend to our neighboring country’s capital Tallinn, a 2 hour ferry trip from Helsinki.

It was really quiet along the seafront where we walked, but we did see a path in the snow so we could tell it had been walked on. We were heading for a new and acclaimed Maritime Museum called Lennusadam (the Seaplane Harbour). It’s located in a sort of industrial area /old fishery neighborhood, which was not of touristic interest until very recently. All we knew was we’d find the museum following the path by the sea!

I can really recommend the museum to anyone who’s going to Estonia. Especially those of you who are inspired by the Steampunk style would love it, with all the antique instruments and machinery. You even get to go inside a submarine! There was enough to look at for the whole day for us parents and the 5-year-old. Heaps of scrapworthy pictures are waiting for another post!

Nautitaan auringosta

Osallistun tällä työllä maaliskuun Once Upon a Sketch -ja Inkido-haasteisiin. OUAS:in luonnospohja on tässä llä ja leiskan aiheena oli viikonloppu, Inkidolla puolestaan ulkoilmaelämä.

Molempiin aiheisiin sopi hyvin kuva Tallinnan matkalta viikko sitten. Tykkään käydä talvisin kävelyllä jäällä tai jään äärellä, mutta tänä talvena se oli jäänyt väliin. Tallinnan satamasta uuteen Lentosataman merimuseoon oli mukavan pituinen kävely ja melkein kokonaan rantaa pitkin. Pirteästä pakkasesta huolimatta aurinko lämmitti jo ihanasti kasvoja!

Museo on aivan upea, suosittelen lämpimästi! Valokuvata sai vapaasti ja innostavia aiheita oli vaikka kuinka. Etenkin steampunk-tyylin ystävälle löytyy ihailtavaa ja kuvattavaa vanhoissa mittaristoissa ja muissa laitteissa. Postaan varmaan myöhemmin jotain museon antia!

Hand Art

Do you remember, as a child, tracing your hands on paper and then coloring and cutting them out? This seems quite popular, as are all kinds of little keepsakes with children's handprints. Why are we so attracted to hand art, I wondered. With children, it's probably because handprints are such concrete memories of that particular moment. But we grown ups can enjoy leaving our handprints, too, so why not try hand art! These are also being traded like ATCs.



The background for both hands is napkins glued with white gesso, and the Christmas hand has some more layers of paper scraps and stenciling. I got myself the embossing heat tool for Christmas, and used that on the poinsettia. Young Frida Kahlo has a background of one single napkin that looks like patchwork, and frames made of a rub-on.



Kädenjälkiä

Muistatko, piirrettiinkö sinun lapsuudessasi käden ääriviivoista kuvioita, jotka sitten väritettiin ja leikattiin? Moni on tehnyt tätä, ja vielä tutumpaa on lasten kädenjälkien painaminen kortteihin ja pikku lahjoihin. Mietin, mikähän niissä käsissä niin viehättää − lasten kohdalla kai ainakin se, että kädenjälki on konkreettinen muisto ohimenevästä hetkestä, jolloin se on tehty. Mutta näitä on kiva tehdä ja tallentaa oma kädenjälkensä aikuisenakin, huomasin! Opin äskettäin, että näitä myös vaihdellaan ATC-korttien tavoin, ja innostuin kokeilemaan.

Molempien käsien taustakerroksena on gesson päälle liimattuja servettejä. Joulukädessä on kerroksia enemmänkin, sabluunapainantaa sekä erilaisia papereita revittyinä ja ympyräleikkurilla leikattuina. Ostin itselleni kuumailmapuhaltimen joululahjaksi etukäteen, ja sitä testailin joulutähtileimasimella. Frida Kahlon nuoruudenkuvan taustana on tilkkutäkkikuvioista servettiä, josta tuli gessolla aika pastelli kontrastiksi mustavalkokuvalle. Kuvan kehykset on leikattu siirtokuvasta.

Sewing: A Chunky Page

I love sewing, and everything that relates to that: fabrics, ribbons, buttons, and of course my old faithful sewing machine! Sewing was this week's challenge at Take a Word.

For this piece, I tried both a new card format and a new background technique and am excited about both! The card sixe is 4x4 inches and it's called a chunky. They are usually made of a bit sturdier backing than ATCs so they're tough enough to become a book if you want to. You can punch one hole on top left or several on the left side, and collect a whole book of the same theme!

I want to collect these now, too, and sewing might well be the theme of my first chunky book. The pages can be traded in the same way as ATCs.



The background was a result of simply experimenting and I was really happy with it! I did not remember to take a complete series of "How to" pictures, but here's a photo of when the background was done.



It's made of decoupaged napkins, but instead of a decoupage glue, I used white acrylic gesso to attach the teared napkins. So the first layer was gesso and then a napkin layer, then again some gesso and napkin scraps.

I added some gesso to even out the wrinkled background in places where the rub-on sewing machine and the stamped button border would be. At this point it seemed to need a bit of another colour than violet and white, so I added a bit of orange yellow acrylic paint.

The sewing machine is a rub-on from Hambly Screen Prints. Buttons border stamp is by Lost Coast Designs, Versamark ink and the Purple Puff for embossing the buttons is by Wow Embossing Powders. All stamping products are from my local craft shop Askartelu Amalia and the artists' supplies from Tempera. My acrylic paints are brands called Amsterdam and Royal & Talens and the gesso is from Pebeo.
